“I do apologize, Molly. We’re treating you abominably, asking you to stand in the kitchen on Sunday night and have nothing but scraps for dinner. And not for the first time. We’re absolute heathens.” Adèle’s expression was strained as Michel took another cheese out of the refrigerator.

Molly laughed. “Are you kidding? Goat cheese and wild boar salami with a sparkling rosé to wash it down—what could be better? And these olives, oh my! This right here,” she said, gesturing to the table with a grand flourish, “is one of the reasons I moved to France. Add a plate of almond croissants and that’s grandeur beyond anyone’s wildest dreams.”

“Please add oysters and bouillabaisse to that list. And—I hope now that you’re settled in France, you’ve found some other redeeming qualities to our country besides food?” said Michel.

“That goes without saying,” said Molly with a grin.

Adèle’s eyes were downcast, and Molly noticed that the sleeve of her shirt was more than a little wrinkled, the sort of messy detail Adèle never allowed. Molly was about to ask if anything was wrong, but something stopped her.

There was plenty wrong, as Molly already knew. And plenty more that Molly did not dream of, not yet.

The friends ate in silence. Michel topped up their glasses, and the silence stretched out and then out some more.

“Is—I mean—are you two all right?” Oh, she had meant to stay quiet a bit longer, but her mouth sometimes had a mind of its own. “I don’t mean to pry. But if either of you would like to talk? About … anything that’s bothering you? I’m all ears.”

Neither Adèle nor Michel met her eye. The silence began to grow, and Molly tried not to grimace.

“Something concerns me,” said Adèle finally, as Michel began wrapping the cheese and putting dishes in the dishwasher, “Even frightens me. It’s that—I don’t want to sound so doom and gloom, but sometimes that’s just what’s real—I believe we are headed to dark times, financially speaking. I don’t mean us specifically, but worldwide: the metrics look very bad to me indeed.”

“The glass is always half empty with you,” said Michel lightly.

“No, Michel. I’m talking about numbers, not feelings. Of course my prediction is an opinion, but it is not based on something I am making up in my head, a manifestation of my glass-half-empty spirit, as you might call it. It’s a prediction, yes, but based on data. This level of reckless investment we’ve been seeing, not only in France but the UK, the rest of the EU, and the United States especially, well, it’s an absolute frenzy! It’s not organic, not based in actual value, do you see what I’m saying? It’s speculation. And it isn’t healthy.”

“I understand that it’s a frenzy of people making a lot of money,” said Michel. “I see this as a good thing. An opportunity. A time to invest. That’s what some experts are saying, at any rate.”

Adèle shook her head. “These sorts of trends—the ‘opportunities,’ as you call them, only last for a short while.
